Habagat: When the Monsoon Brings More Than the Rain

This July, the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) swept through the Philippines, bringing not just torrential rain—but a flood of coastal waste. Amplified by Tropical Storm Crising, Habagat displaced over 6.2 million people and caused ₱4 billion in infrastructure damage (Manila Standard, 2025). But beyond the floods, communities faced another crisis: massive amounts of trash washing ashore.

In Metro Manila alone, the MMDA cleared over 870 tons of garbage from waterways within days (GMA News, 2025). In Palawan, Barangay Mandaragat recorded over 6 tonnes of coastal waste weekly, carried in by storm-driven tides (Palawan News, 2025). The Climate Change Commission warns these intensified monsoon patterns are worsening with climate change—turning seasonal storms into recurring emergencies.

This growing waste surge highlights the urgent need for coastal action. From cleanup drives to smarter waste strategies, every effort counts.
